The School Education Law of Japan defines institutions of higher education to consist of universities, junior colleges, and colleges of technology. National Institute of Technology called "Kosen" were first introduced into the Japanese school system in 1961 in order to provide students between the ages of 15 and 20 with basic knowledge in humanities and natural sciences, and advanced skills and knowledge in technology.The graduates receive an associate degree.With the addition of the 2-year advanced course, 7 years of consistent education is conducted.

Established in 1964, National Institute of Technology(KOSEN) ,Wakayama College has four departments: Intelligent Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Civil Engineering. In 2002, in order to provide students with more opportunities to deepen their specialized studies, the Advanced Engineering Faculty was established offering two 2-year courses: Mechatronics Engineering and Ecosystem Engineering, each accepting eight students.

Over the past 50 plus years,Wakayama College has certified over 8,000 graduates, who are highly evaluated in various fields of engineering, science, and architecture.
